Frugal Friday!

For this week's Frugal Friday tip, I thought I'd add another fun and healthy frugal Valentine's Day treat! This is a recipe for healthy heart shaped pretzels. It's a lovely little treat that's not too sweet like your more traditional cupcakes and candies you might expect on Valentine's Day. Not being a big fan of sugar, I try to find alternative treats that are not so sweet. Also, the prepackaged candy and the other usual goodies can be quite expensive. Not so with homemade pretzels! This one is a winner all the way around! Give them a try!

Make a standard white bread dough with:
one pack of baking yeast
a tablespoon of sugar (I use agave)
2 cups of flour (I use whole wheat pastry flour)
Water to make stiff dough.
Mix and let rise. Knead for five minutes. Shape into 12 ropes and shape on cookie sheets to form a heart -- instead of the usual pretzel shape. Brush with egg white and sprinkle with red colored salt. Let rise a half hour then bake in 400 degree F oven until lightly brown. To make red salt. Take kosher salt and put in a jar. Sprinkle in a few drops of red food coloring. Shake the salt to mix. Voila! Red Salt!

Ooo, how cute! I simply MUST do this this year.

How long do you let it rise the first time?

Not long... usually 15 to 30 minutes. I generally just 'eyeball' it and when it looks nice and plump, I start to knead. It's easy and quick! Let me know how they turn out!

That is absolutely perfect! I was looking for an idea for our homeschool co-op this next Tuesday. I'm going to give this a try. Thank you.
