Why I don't watch Oprah...

...and it's not just because I don't have cable!

I came across an article about a recent show that Oprah Winfrey did on The Secret. You know, the Bible tells us there is nothing new under the sun and this holds true for The Secret. This is the same brand of New Age that has always existed and will always exist until the Lord returns. But, what bothers me about The Secret - and Oprah particularly - is how many people are duped into believing these devil's lies. The Secret teaches that if you 'channel' enough 'positive energy' that good things will come your way. As Carmon from Buried Treasure said in her thought provoking article on the subject...

" It’s the prosperity gospel minus the gospel, though both are no gospel at all, only a path to perdition (Galatians 1:8-9)"

One of the guests on Oprah's show stated, "If you think about it, the universe has a conveyor belt of presents lined up for you, and until you receive the one and fully are grateful for it, the next one can't come out of the chute. It's all lined up." Huh? Where is that in Scripture?

This brings me to the more fundamental problem. After all, Oprah wouldn't be a billionairess if there weren't a lot of comatose sheep being led to the slaughter. Of course the world is full of lost people with all sorts of wrong thoughts, selfish beliefs, and every imaginable - and unimaginable - sin. What I'd like to address is the so-called Christian. This is the person that may own a Bible but doesn't know where it is as it collects dust where it fell behind the dresser or maybe it has spent the better part of its life in the dark 'Lost and Found' closet at some mega church. This person attends church when it's convenient... when they are not too tired, don't have a baseball game, it's not a pretty day, and there's nothing better to do. There are lots of these. Here's the problem... they don't know the Scripture but they think they do. They listen to the likes of Joel Osteen and Rick Warren... and Oprah Winfrey... and they wait for these ear ticklers to tell them that God loves them and has a wonderful plan for their life. That's all they want to hear. They don't want to know they are a sinner. They don't want to hear that they must turn from their sins. They don't want to know the penalty of sin is death. They don't want to know that heaven and hell are real places and hold real eternal souls. They certainly don't want to know that having a free ticket to heaven involves more than a walk down the proverbial aisle when they were six. They want to hear that the fact they have lived in open rebellion defying the True and Living God their entire lives is fine if that's what 'feels right' to them... 'positive energy' and all. They are the ones that live as slaves to their sin six days a week and salve what's left of their seared conscience by a forty minute milk toast sermon on Sunday morning.

It's these so-called Christians to whom Oprah and her Secret appeals. In a quote from his very insightful article, James Swan says:

"Since these Oprah shows aired, the local chain bookstore near my house said not only are they sold out of The Secret, but also the publisher has to print more to meet the demand. This doesn't surprise me. The Secret assumes the unity of all religions, Christianity does not. The Secret assumes a universal law of attraction channeled by each persons choices; the Bible declares the sovereignty of God. The Secret teaches you how to live a life of glory; the Bible explains your life will be identified with the cross. The Secret gives each person the power of performing good and evil; The Bible describes humanity as enslaved to sin. The thrust of The Secret is a blatant denial of the Gospel, and incompatible with Christianity. If someone tries to tell you The Secret, I suggest countering with the revealed truth of Jesus Christ."

If you want to see how far people can stray from the Truth of God's Word, read this article that was on ABC News this morning. It doesn't take long when people allow others to tell them what the want to hear as opposed to the Truth of Scripture that goons like this start fleecing the 'flock'. And, add a Hollywood credential or two behind someone's name and suddenly they have all authority to proclaim what is true and what is false. Read all about James Cameron's supposed "discovery". It's a slippery slope, gentle readers, a very slippery slope indeed.

I know I'm preaching mostly to the choir here, but if there are any of you that have bought this devil's lie, I would pray and encourage you to seek the Scriptures on the personhood of Jesus Christ and the truth of the Gospel... and not Oprah and the rest of the charlatans brand of prosperity 'gospel' which is no gospel at all.

Kind of reminds me of a friend who when I asked her what she thought God had to say about her struggling marriage, responded with "Well He doesn't want us to be unhappy and I'm unhappy in this marriage".
